St. Gallen/Switzerland, 17 . 5. 2002 (PROTEXT) - For the24th time the Max Schmidheiny Foundation will award its FreedomPrize on Saturday, May 25, on the occasion of the 32nd ISC-Symposium, taking place at the University of St. Gallen, fromMay 2325, 2002. Every year, the Max Schmidheiny Foundationpromotes outstanding scientific, political and entrepreneurialinitiatives and achievements that safeguard individual freedomand responsibility. This year's prize will be awarded to Prof.Drs. Ruud Lubbers, High Commissioner, United Nations HighCommissariat for Refugees, Geneva, for his contribution to themaintenance and further development of a free social andeconomic order. He will be speaking on "New Challenges ThroughModern Conflicts" in the framework of this year's general topic,"Pushing Limits Questioning Goals". In this context several other renowned decision makers willcontribute to the open and constructive dialogue betweengenerations and cultures that the ISC promotes. Lord Robertsonof Port Ellen, Secretary General of NATO, will make use of theplatform of the ISC-Symposium to deliver a strategic speech on"The Future of NATO's Partnerships and Co-operations", whileProf. Dr. Joseph Deiss, Federal Councillor & Head of the FederalDepartment for Foreign Affairs, Berne, will address the issue of"The Feasible and Desirable in Swiss Foreign Policy". The extraordinary field of participants including the 250winners of the ISC Wings of Excellence Award, the world'slargest student competition, will discuss recent issues ofcorporate governance with Christine Lagarde, Chairman of theExecutive Committee, Baker & McKenzie, Vernon Ellis,International Chairman, Accenture, as well as André Leysen,Honorary Chairman, Agfa-Gevaert Group. A debate on the goals andlimits of scientific research will center on the statements ofErnesto Bertarelli, Chief Executive Officer, SeronoInternational SA, and Augustinus O. Praem.
