55th Meeting of Nobel Laureates Opens in Lindau State Minister Goppel welcomes "Olympus of world-wide research"

LINDAU 27. 6. 2005 (PROTEXT/ots) - Count Björn Bernadottewelcomed the 44 Nobel Laureates of Chemistry, Physics andMedicine/Physiology and over 700 scientists of tomorrow from54 countries. The Bavarian State Minister for Science, Researchand Art, Dr. Thomas Goppel, described the Meeting of NobelLaureates as an "Olympus of world-wide research". The vision ofits founder, Count Lennart Bernadotte, to develop the Lindauforum into a "window to the world" has been realised.
The alumni database and the lectures given by the NobelLaureates, which can also be followed at www.lindau-nobel.de,promote intercultural dialog.
The Meeting allows Europe as a site of research and scienceto present itself as a powerful partner to the global scientificcommunity. According to Prof. Frieder Meyer-Krahmer, StateSecretary of the Federal Ministry of Educationand Research (BMBF), "the Meeting is an extremely importantsource of impetus, with focal messages being sent out fromLindau". The Meetings of Nobel Laureates stand for "science madein Germany" and are European ambassadors vis-ŕ-vis Asia and theUSA.
Responsible for assuring the financial security of theMeetings are the Committee and the Foundation of the Meetings ofNobel Laureates in Lindau. Their goal, said Count BjörnBernadotte, is "to cover half of the costswith contributions from private patrons and industry, with aquarter coming respectively from European and German publicfunds". In addition to the European Commission, the BMBF, the Stateof Bavaria and the International Lake Constance Conference(IBK), present partners of the Meeting include the DeutscheTelekom Foundation, Deutsche Lufthansa AG, BMW, Hewlett-Packard,Dr.-Ing. h.c. Ferdinand Porsche AG, Novartis, the Federation ofthe Bavarian Metal and Electronics Industry, theFederation of the Bavarian Chemical Industry, SüdwestmetallBaden-Württemberg, the U.S. Department of Energy, the RobertBosch Foundation, Audi, SAP and Siemens.
