BMW Group signs international declaration of "Cleaner Production" of the United Nations environmental programme

Munich (ots/PROTEXT) - This week the BMW Group signed theinternational declaration of the United Nations' environmentalprogramme this week.
This treaty with the BMW Group again confirms the cuttingedge role of the sustainable treatment of resources in the senseof a responsible and considerate dealing with and within theenvironment. "To the BMW Group sustainability is a corporate principle.Being the first car manufacturer in the world to certify all ourproduction plants according to ISO 14000 was the first step.Being the leader of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index twiceasserts us that we not only are on the right way but have madegood progress as well. As we joined the environmental programmeof the United Nations "Cleaner Production" is just anotherlogical step in the direction of consequent sustainability",emphasises Dr. Norbert Reithofer, member of the board of the BMWAG, who signed the treaty in company of Jacqueline Aloisi deLarderel, Assistant Executive Director of the United Nationsenvironmental organisation UNEP. Jacqueline Aloisi de Larderel as well sees a direct connectionbetween the Groups joining the globally valid "Cleaner ProductionProgramme" and the successful sustainability strategy of thecompany. "For the finance and investor community thesustainability strategy and the acceptance of the BMW Group tothe Dow Jones Sustainability Index plays an increasingly biggerrole in evaluating the enterprise." The BMW Group was confirmed in the Dow Jones SustainabilityIndex as the world wide leading car manufacturer in view ofsustainable economy in 1999 and 2000. The international declaration of the United Nations now signedby BMW is a voluntary made agreement to make use of a specific,preventive strategy, the so-called Cleaner Production. Thisstrategy from the very beginning propagates the avoidance ofnegative influences in contrast to the so-called "End-of-Pipe"solution, where environmental technologies come into operation atthe end of the production process only. As the first European car manufacturer the BMW Group publisheda sustainability report, the "Sustainable Value Report".
