Frankfurt Airport Tops 50 Million Passengers This Year

FRANKFURT (Germany) 21. 12. 2004 (PROTEXT/ots) - Today,Frankfurt Airport (FSE: FRA) welcomed its 50 millionth passengerfor 2004, the first time that Germanys largest airport hastopped the 50 million annual passenger figure. The record-breaking passenger, Ingelore Winkelmann-Sevastopoulos, arrivedon the Lufthansa morning flight from San Francisco and waspersonally greeted by Fraport AGs executive board chairman Dr.Wilhelm Bender.

Travelling with her 17 year old daughter from the GoldenGate city, Ingelore Winkelmann-Sevastopoulos received a bigwelcome directly at her arrival gate in Terminal 1. She wasgreeted Dr. Bender in front of a large group of radio andtelevision teams, photographers and journalists. Stefan Lauer,Lufthansas director of human resources, also welcomed Ms.Winkelmann- Sevastopoulos on behalf of the airline. Later, shetook a connecting flight from FRA to Hanover, Germany.

Along with a bouquet of flowers and warm greetings, FRAs 50millionth star passenger received presents.

Fraport issponsoring a party for 50 guests, while Lufthansa gave awaycoupons for two free intercontinental flights in businessclass.

The figure of 50 million passengers corresponds to twice thenumber of inhabitants living in Venezuela or Malaysia. Comparedto mega cities, 50 million passengers would be five times thepopulation of Cairo or Sao Paulo, for example.

In the spring of 1955 Lufthansa launched its first post- warair services from Frankfurt. Its home base of FrankfurtAirport first reached the one million passenger figure in 1957.In 1971, one year before the inauguration of Terminal 1, FRAexceeded 10 million passengers. By 1985, FRA was welcoming 20million passengers per year; then 30 million passengers in 1992.Only five years later, FRA topped the 40 million passenger levelin 1997. If it had not been for the events of 9/11 in 2001, FRAwould have already exceeded the 50 million figure three yearsago.
