Passenger figures at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) once againregistered a strong increase in February 2004. After the January2004 record month - the strongest January for passenger and cargotraffic in the airport's history - FRA achieved an increase ofnine percent compared to the same month last year. Withapproximately 3.6 million passengers in February 2004, thisrepresents another monthly record. Even without the extra day(February 29) in the 2004 leap year, the distinct upward growthtrend of about five percent in recent months would have continuedand would also have resulted in a record performance for themonth. Intercontinental traffic, in particular, recorded above averagegrowth. Destinations in the Far and Middle East as well as NorthAmerica showed double-digit growth. Holiday destinations such asthe Dominican Republic, Mexico and Sri Lanka were also in strongdemand. In the first two months of 2004, some 7.2 million passengerstraveled via FRA, 5.5 percent more than in the same period lastyear. Frankfurt also recorded considerable gains in the cargo sector.The airport handled 137,505 metric tons of airfreight, a 12.2percent increase. This is the highest cargo volume of anyFebruary in the airport's history. Adjusted for February 29,cargo tonnage would still have increased strongly by more thanseven percent - also a monthly record. Intercontinental trafficcontinued to drive growth: airfreight volumes to and from theMiddle East, central and southern Africa, the Far East and LatinAmerica experienced particularly strong growth. FRA's airfreighttonnage for the January-to-February two-month period rose by 8.1percent to 252,322 metric tons. Airmail volumes continued todecline in February 2004, mainly due to a continuing reduction inservices for Deutsche Post's domestic overnight airmail network:a decline of 6.9 percent, or 10,116 metric tons, compared toFebruary 2003. In February, Frankfurt Airport registered 35,999 takeoffs andlandings, 2.4 percent more than in the same month last year.Maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) rose by 3.8 percent to more thantwo million metric tons. Overall, the airports of the Fraport Group registered about 4.8million passengers, 12.1 percent more than in February 2003.Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN), with about 187,600 passengers,registered an increase of 33.2 percent. Antalya Airport (AYT)exceeded the previous year's figures by 34.7 percent, withapproximately 313,300 international passengers. Hanover Airport(HAJ) increased by 8.6 percent to about 299,600 passengers andLima Airport (LIM) by 21.6 percent to about 394,600 passengers.Cargo throughput for the Fraport Group amounted to over 169,700metric tons, 12 percent more than in the same month last year.The Fraport Group's airports registered a total of 52,856takeoffs and landings in the reporting month, 2.9 percent morethan in February 2003.
