Fraport Traffic Figures - January 2004: Record Month Again as Frankfurt Airport Registers Strongest January Ever for Passenger and Cargo Traffic

FRA/rap> Frankfurt Airport (FRA) achieved a new monthlyrecord in January 2004 - the best January in the airport'shistory - with about 3.6 million passengers, or a 2.3 percentincrease over the corresponding period last year. Inparticular, high growth rates were registered forintercontinental traffic on routes to the Far East and NorthAmerica. The boom in long-haul travel, which German touroperators reported for the winter season, is reflected inJanuary's passenger figures. For example, holiday destinationslike Egypt, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Sri Lankarecorded double-digit growth rates.

In the airfreight traffic category, FRA also recordednoticeable growth of 3.6 percent versus January 2003. With114,817 metric tons of airfreight, the reporting month was thebest January in the airport's history. The previous record,reached during the boom year of 2000, was exceeded by 1,000metric tons. The growth engine for this proved to beintercontinental traffic. In particular, cargo tonnage shipped toand from the Middle East, Central and South Africa, as well asLatin America developed strongly.

FRA's airmail volume declined further to 10,667 metric tonsmainly because a renewed reduction in services for the domesticovernight airmail network in January 2004. This represented adecline of 7.8 percent over January 2003. Due to poor weatherconditions the number of aircraft movements dropped slightlybelow the previous year's level. FRA registered 36,917 takeoffsand landings in January 2004, 1.7 percent less than the samemonth last year. Maximum Takeoff Weights (MTOWs) grew slightlyby 0.1 percent to about two million metric tons.

Combined, the six airports of the Fraport Group served about4.7 million passengers in the reporting month, 4.1 percent morethan in January 2003. Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) had 176,000passengers, a 21.8 percent jump in passenger traffic. With about270,000 international travelers, Antalya Airport (AYT) sawpassenger traffic grow by 11.5 percent over the previous year'sfigure. Hanover Airport (HAJ) increased by 7.9 percent to about288,000 passengers and Lima Airport (LIM) grew 7.3 percent toabout 386,000 passengers. Cargo throughput (airfreight andairmail) for the Fraport Group increased to over 152,000 metrictons, 3.4 percent more than in the corresponding month of 2003.The Fraport Group's airports registered a total of 53,591takeoffs and landings in January 2004, 0.6 percent more than inthe same month last year.
