Frankfurt/Main 14.07.2004 (PROTEXT/ots) - Frankfurt Airport's (FRA) traffic figures for June 2004 indicate noticeable growth rates, as in recent months. Fraport AG - FRA's owner and manager - recorded about 4.5 million passengers in the reporting month, 5.1 percent more than in June 2003. In particular, intercontinental traffic to Asia, North Africa and North America registered double-digit growth rates. In the European travel market, flights to Portugal benefited from the European soccer championships, while classical vacation destinations like Spain and Turkey grew only slightly. Fraport AG expects these travel destinations to experience noticeable passenger growth in July, when the summer school vacation period begins in Hesse as well as most of the other German federal states.
More than 24.3 million passengers used Frankfurt Airport during the first half of 2004, 8.2 percent more than in the corresponding period last year.
Frankfurt Airport also registered noticeable growth in airfreight tonnage. In June 2004, FRA handled 143,265 metric tons of airfreight, 15.8 percent more than in the same period last year - thus achieving the highest monthly growth rate this year for cargo. Cargo traffic to the Far East and North America, for example, registered noticeable growth. Furthermore, routes to and from South America also registered strong growth. From January to June 2004, FRA handled 834,877 metric tons of airfreight, an 11.7 percent increase compared to the first half of 2003.
Frankfurt Airport's airmail volume declined by 3.2 percent in June 2004 to 8,916 metric tons. FRA handled 58,030 metric tons of airmail in the first half of the year, down by 7.2 percent compared to June 2003. The decline can be attributed to the continuing service reductions in the domestic overnight airmail network based at FRA.
With 40,489 takeoffs and landings in June 2004, Frankfurt Airport recorded a 6.2 percent increase in aircraft movements compared to the corresponding month last year. Maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) rose by 11 percent to more than 2.3 million metric tons, due to the airlines deploying larger aircraft at FRA. From January to June 2004, Frankfurt Airport had 232,148 takeoffs and landings, 2.9 percent more than in the first half of 2003. The MTOWs climbed by 5.6 percent to approximately 13.1 million metric tons.
The Fraport Group's six airports together served about seven million passengers in June 2004, some 10 percent more than in June 2003. With 247,720 passengers, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) registered a 16.7 percent increase in passenger traffic. With about 1.4 million passengers, Turkey's Antalya Airport (AYT) recorded even 29.6 percent growth compared to the same period last year. In Germany, Hanover Airport (HAJ) grew by 3.7 percent to 443,559 passengers and Saarbrücken Airport (SCN) increased by 2.8 percent to 49,370 passengers. Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru achieved a 13 percent jump in traffic, growing to 403,758 passengers in June 2004.
Total cargo throughput for the Fraport Group reached 178,657 metric tons in June 2004, increasing by 14.4 percent compared to the same month last year. From January to June 2004, Fraport's airfreight throughput grew 11.3 percent to 1,043,710 metric tons. The Fraport Group's airports had a total of 65,992 takeoffs and landings in June 2004, 6.4 percent more than in the same month last year. In the first half of 2004, aircraft movements climbed by 4.6 percent to 358,637 takeoffs and landings.
