Fraport Traffic Figures - September 2005: Frankfurt Airport's Airfreight Booms with Peak Results - Steady Traffic Growth Since the Start of the Year

Frankfurt/Main (PROTEXT/ots) 13. 10. 2005 - Following two verysuccessful vacation months when the five million passenger markwas exceeded for the first time, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) almostreached this monthly record again in September 2005 - when4,959,193 passengers used the FRA global air transportation hub.This represents a 2.6 percent increase compared to the samemonth of the 2004 record year and establishes a new peak figurefor the month of September. European traffic generated the most noticeable increase again.Intercontinental traffic also achieved above average growth. Inparticular, routes to and from South Africa and the Middle Eastdrove this growth. In the reporting month FRA's airfreight tonnage grew even morebriskly than passenger traffic, jumping by 9.7 percent over theprevious year to 161,989 metric tons. Thus, to date FRA hasachieved its best September for airfreight throughput. InSeptember 2005, FRA also recorded its second highest monthlytonnage figure ever. Likewise, the number of aircraft movements at FRA climbed inSeptember 2005 to 43,274 takeoffs and landings, an increase of4.4 percent compared to the same month last year. The closing of FRA's overnight domestic airmail hub againresulted in an expected decline of 17.4 percent. Thus, FRA onlyhandled 7,718 metric tons of airmail in September 2005. MaximumTakeoff Weights (MTOWs) - a basic element for calculatingairport charges - reached 2,497,692 metric tons, a 4.3 percentincrease compared to last year. FRA's traffic development during the first three quarters of2005 can be characterized as absolutely positive. The number ofpassengers reached 39,771,017, a 2.5-percent increase comparedto the first nine months of the 2004 record year. With1,367,159 metric tons, the airfreight category even recordedgrowth of 7.5 percent. The number of aircraft movements rose by3.3 percent to 369,753. The other German airports in the Fraport Group also registeredsteady traffic growth. Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) served2,322,687 passengers from January through September 2005, anincrease of 11.6 percent. Traffic at Hanover Airport (HAJ) grewin the first three quarters of the year by 7.4 percent to4,325,098 passengers. Saarbrücken Airport (SCN) served 385,069passengers, or 6.5 percent growth for the same time period. Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru saw traffic jump by 12.4 percent to4,268,409 passengers, while figures for Antalya Airport inTurkey were affected in the past few months by the inaugurationof a second passenger terminal. Thus, 4,382,154 travelers usedFraport's Antalya terminal, a 55.3 percent drop compared to2004. The six airports of the Fraport Group welcomed 55,447,155passengers from January to September 2005. Compared to lastyear, the Group's total traffic dropped by 5.8 percent due tothe special development at Antalya Airport.
