Lambda Physik AG increases sales by 58 per cent in the first quarter / new record for order intake

Goettingen/Germany (PROTEXT) - Lambda Physik AG (securityidentification no. 549 427) reports a successful first quarter offiscal year 2001 (Oct. 1 - Dec. 31, 2000) following the recordfiscal year 2000 which ended on September 30, 2000. The world-wide leading supplier of pulsed UV lasers increased ist sales inthe first quarter from EUR 21.0 million to EUR 33.3 million,which represents a growth of 58 per cent compared to the sameperiod of the previous year. Net income doubled from EUR 1.3million to EUR 2.6 million. "We are very pleased with the positive development in all ourapplication areas. As the technology and market leader forexcimer lasers and diode-pumped solid-state lasers, we arebenefitting from our concentration on the global and fast-growingmarkets in the fields of lithography, industry, medicine andscience. We have expanded our global presence substantially,especially in lithography," commented President and ChiefExecutive Officer Dr Dirk Basting. The company succeeded ingenerating one third of the prior fiscal year's total salesduring the quarter. All laser application areas contributed tothe encouraging development with lithography registering thehighest growth rate (86 per cent). The earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) improved by 61 percent to EUR 5.3 million and the EBIT margin rose from 15.7 percent to 16.0 per cent. The earnings per share amounted to EUR0.20. In the first three months of the new fiscal year, thecompany recorded the highest quarterly order intake in itshistory (EUR 43.2 million, + 44 per cent compared to the previousyear). Highlights of the first quarter One of the highlights of the first quarter was the 17 millionUS$ order placed by Silicon Valley Group Inc. for the delivery ofexcimer lasers from the NovaLine series. This order representedthe biggest individual order in the company's history. Thedelivery of the first unit from the latest generation of 4 kHz193 nm lasers, which enable customers to reduce operating costsby more than 40 per cent compared to previous 193 nm technology,was one of the technological highlights of the quarter. LambdaPhysik AG is the first manufacturer world-wide to have supplied a4 kHz 193 nm laser to a leading stepper and scanner producer forlithography purposes.
