.ORG Users to Benefit From Increased Speed of Service

RESTON (USA) 7th September (PROTEXT) - New Domain NameRegistrations/Modifications Will Be Visible Within Minutes, aKey Benefit for Organizations That Rely on Internet Visibility

The Public Interest Registry (PIR) today announced theimplementation of a change that enables .ORG names to resolvethrough web browsers worldwide within 5 minutes, providing aspeed enhancement that will significantly benefit .ORG users.This is possible because PIR has completed the final step inswitching the publication of its zone file to Afilias Limited,its backend registry services provider. This change will enhancethe speed of registration/modification-to-resolution of .ORGnames to less than 5 minutes, from the previous average of 12-24hours.

"Today's announcement is another significant step in PIR'scommitment to establish a new level of exemplary registryservices for our .ORG users internationally. We are now theworld's largest registry to offer registration/modification-to-resolution in less than five minutes. Previously this was anordeal that took a minimum of 12 hours, often longer. While .ORGis unrestricted, the primary users of .ORG are the members ofthe non-commercial community. The improved registration/modification-to-resolution time isone of many improvements PIR is making to the .ORG domain tobetter serve the noncommercial community and all .ORG domainholders. After a smooth transition of the database (with nodisruption to customers) from the former registry operator inJanuary of this year, PIR began the transition from a thin to athick registry. This will provide .ORG users technical andoperational advantages including central registry escrowbenefits and centralized Whois information. Another recentimprovement was the implementation of the Redemption Grace Period(RGP), which will give .ORG domain holders an additional 30 daysto recover their domain name if it is deleted inadvertently.This additional safeguard will help prevent .ORG name holdersfrom accidentally losing their names. PIR will continue to offerinnovative new services in an effort to provide superior supportand cutting- edge technology to .ORG users.

PIR has also established a global Advisory Council ofinternational leaders in education, policy, technology and thenon-profit sector to ensure that PIR is aware of issues facingnoncommercial organizations throughout the world. The AdvisoryCouncil is actively reviewing services to benefit .ORG users. PIRis also sponsoring a series of training seminars to help globalnon-profit organizations use the Internet to build community andattract philanthropic support.
