Promotion of State-of-the-Art Laser Technology with International Innovation Prize

Ditzingen, Germany (PROTEXT/ots) - The private foundationBerthold Leibinger Stiftung holds its Innovation Prizecompetition for applied laser technology once again. The topicsin 2002 will be laser medicine and production technology, and inJuly a prestigious international jury will select theprizewinners. The invention of the laser 40 years ago initiated adevelopment that has produced remarkable results in every sphereof daily life: today compact data storage media such as CDs andDVDs, eyesight correction and restoration as well as carefulpatient treatment in medical technology and manufacturing of such"drivers of modern society" as microprocessors and vehicles wouldbe unthinkable without the laser. One of today's most importantkey technologies, the once in public largely ignored laser hasleft the physicists' laboratories and is now an integral part ofalmost all sectors of technology and modern life. And yet professional laser technology is still in its infancy,and much important progress can be expected. The BertholdLeibinger Innovationspreis recognizes this fascinatingtechnology and promotes it. From the year 2000 onward, the prizeis awarded on a two-yearly basis to scientists and developersfor outstanding and innovative research work in applied laserphysics. With the second prize competition the theme of lasermedicine is included additionally to production technology. The prestigious jury is made up of experts and leadingpersonalities both in industry and science from the USA, Japanand Germany. It includes the inventor of the laser, NobelLaureate Charles H. Townes. The jury selects three prizewinnersafter personal presentations of the work nominated. The prizeswill be distributed in October 2002 at the special prizegivingceremony. The prize money amounts to 35,000 Euros. The competition is open to individuals as much as to projectgroups. Work submitted can take the form of dissertations,habilitations, patent specifications or other recognizedscientific publications in any language. The closing date forapplications is March 31, 2002. The non-profit, private Berthold Leibinger Stiftung wasfounded in 1992 by the Managing Partner and President of theTRUMPF GmbH + Co. KG in Germany, Prof. Dr.-Ing. E.H. BertholdLeibinger. Its objectives include the furtherment of science andresearch, and it is also highly committed in the social andcultural spheres.
