Schott cooperates to optimize ultra-thin polymer diodes

Mainz, Germany (ots/PROTEXT) 08.04.2004 - The introduction ofsuper-flat displays and lighting solutions based on organiclight-emitting diodes has just come one step closer. Workingclosely with scientists at the University of Potsdam, Schottresearchers have been able to increase the luminescence oforganic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) to such an extent that thebrightness of 100 Cd/m2 required for flat screens may be obtainedwith voltages under six volts. At the same time, they were ableto decrease the current over an area measuring 10x10 cm2 to just40 mA. By way of contrast, a small flashlight consumes aroundten times as much energy.
This breakthrough was made possible by way of targetedoptimization of the layer composition and the various stages ofthe manufacturing process. At present, the research term isfurther investigating the life expectancy and long-term stabilityof these high-performance components, since their behavior overthe long term is critical for industrial applications at a laterdate. Possible uses are in automobile instrumentation or as areplacement for conventional light sources, in IT products andconsumer electronics. The project has the support of the GermanFederal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
OLEDs may be used as thin lights with an extremely homogenousluminescence. They are composed of light-emitting layers oforganic molecules or polymers only nanometers thick,characterized by an exceptional brightness and color brilliance.In addition, they are both very flexible and light, with an angleof emission significantly larger than that of LCD systems. Whiletheir production costs may still be higher and their lifeexpectancy shorter than desired, renowned teams of researchersaround the world are working on their further development and onoptimizing the manufacturing techniques. Within the next three tofour years, OLEDs will already have a considerable share of theglobal display market - amounting to an estimated three billionUS dollars. The growth rate is estimated at somewhere between 12and 18 % over the same period.
