Traffic Grows at Frankfurt Airport Despite Pilot Strike / Larger Aircraft Result in Capacity Growth; Number of Passengers Per Aircraft Movement Increases

Frankfurt/M. (PROTEXT) - In the first half of 2001, almost 24million passengers used Frankfurt Airport (FRA) - 2.6 percent or600,000 more passengers than in the same six-month period lastyear. While an increase of almost six percent was stillregistered during the first quarter of 2001, in the secondquarter growth weakened noticeably, particularly because of theLufthansa pilot strike. "We expect that we will reach a clearly higher level ofpassenger growth for all of 2001, than could be achieved in thefirst half of the year," said Dr. Wilhelm Bender, Chairman ofFraport AG's Executive Board. Due to the weakening global economy, above all, FRA'sairfreight tonnage dropped 0.7 percent in the first half of 2001.The strong growth in the first quarter of 2001 was followed by amarked decline in the second quarter. Nevertheless, FrankfurtAirport remains the number one air cargo gateway in all ofEurope. Although the number of aircraft movements at FRA grew onlyslightly by about 1 percent over the first half of 2000, theaverage number of passengers per flight increased by 1.7 percent.The Maximum Takeoff Weights (MTOWs) increased by 3.8 percentduring the same period. This means a higher share of largeaircraft at FRA and, thus, a capacity increase per aircraftmovement. MTOWs are important for the calculation of take-off andlanding charges.
